Lucy McKenzie came to specialize in trompe l’œil aged thirty, at the Institut supérieur de peinture décorative Van Der Kelen-Logelain in Brussels. Preparing surfaces, imitating marble or wood, the craft of ornamental illusion and depth, constructing simple yet spectacular spaces. She uses these methods to open the materiality of the surface onto decorative and political fictions. “You follow the procedure,” McKenzie says, “you get the effects.”
